Paul Bernstein has performed, taught, and spoken in far-ranging cultural settings. His unusual working process centers on interdisciplinary performance and the vital relation between improvisational process and compositional choice-making, both as a training and a cogent means of creating hybrid performance material. He brings to light values and skills contained in revolutionary performance innovations that were largely misunderstood and quickly disregarded – a common dismissal of experimental potential amid today’s established market. Ironically, it’s still Shakespeare that takes up the most space from the new, but no one says anything about this disparity anymore. The awareness of an imbalance is what the art world used to have to go for it, back when people spoke out. And with no voice, what is to become of the Avant-garde and its incomparable influence on the lineage of theater and film? Profitability can’t be the only obstacle. Bernstein posits that it has everything to do with who we have become, and nothing to do with our having already made everything there is to make. Clearly, we have only scratched the surface of new performance and inceptive training. The answer so clearly lies in “how” one works. It is “the way of how” that dictates what will be made and responded to in the future.
