About the Work

Folk Cabaret

Once upon a time, there were folk legends, and Paul Bernstein has recently played with one of the great crooners of all time - Hoyt Jenks. Here are Jenks & Bernstein tracks from concerts and studio recordings. Included is a tribute to Mr. Jenks’ early works in Cincinnati and Milwaukee.

Coming Soon: Bernstein’s recordings with folk legends Goat Lowe & Seth Ides!

Physical Theater & Dance

Paul Bernstein states: “I have always harbored a surplus of acting impulses, especially while riding alone on elevators. At first, there was just some wild stuff that came out of me, but after acquiring more control, I came to better relate to acting through an elaborate warm-up process that became ritual. At these times, often private and detached, I could become far more imaginative, obsessive, and tuned-in to acting in relation to time, space, and imagination.”

Short Films

Writer/actor Paul Bernstein and director/documentarist Robert A. Emmons Jr. create short films that have played in theaters, museums, art galleries, and festivals. These character-based works feature a heightened documentary style that extends reality into several directions.

Coming Soon: A new film script: Joke Perilous (for 2022 production)

Radio Theater

Sound design, radio broadcasts and multi-track recording devices have filled a vital corner of Paul Bernstein’s work with an unmatchable intimacy – a theater of the mind. Listening audiences still don’t know what to expect from radio theater and they’re susceptible to surprise, which is perfect.

Merging Theater & Film

Performance research at Rutgers University–Camden: This project footage originated with 20 clunky VHS cassettes, giant mirrors, and opaque plastic stapled to scrim for rear-screen projections. Filmmaker Robert A. Emmons Jr., scenic designer James H. Mobley, and sound designer Stefan Orn Arnarson have collaborated with director Paul Bernstein on 13 interdisciplinary productions.
